JEMS EMS Today Conference, Baltimore Md.  February 29-Mar 2.  EMS Top 10 Innovators 2011.  In March, Ryan Mayfield, EMS educator - QA/QI/Research for Porter, Littleton and Parker Adventist Hospitals - traveled to Baltimore for the EMS Today conference, where he was recognized as one of the nation's Top Ten EMS Innovators in 2009. The award was for Ryan's work on prehospital sepsis alerts.

Among his many activities, Ryan helped develop the sepsis alert criteria, hand-combed nearly 1,000 patient records for statistics, and within one month worked collaboratively with other EMS team members to educate nearly 900 EMS personnel on the sepsis alert criteria and the use of the field lactate monitors.

All of the EMS team members of the team worked with Ryan to develop the sepsis alert program along with the EMS sepsis physician-champion Wayne Guerra, MD, and Clancy Meyers, EMS QA/QI/Research specialist.

Ryan received a lovely glass plaque, free registration to the conference, an invitation to a VIP reception and a write-up in the special supplement section of the Journal of Emergency Medical Services magazine in April.

Congratulations to Ryan and to all the EMS field personnel who have participated in the sepsis alert pilot study!
